Feminine Care: My Honey Pot review

• By

Hey loves! I’m bringing you my take on the Honey Pot company pads that I decided to try out recently.  Video reviews and social media posts about this brand have been swirling the internet for the past few years, and when Aunt Flo made an appearance last week, it was my chance to give them a shot.

My local Target had the entire Honey Pot Co. product line all in stock.  I picked up the regular-sized pads and a few other items that I probably did not really need (Target gets me EVERY. TIME.), and headed home.

As a self-proclaimed girly girl, I was immediately in love with the packaging. The cute colors and the super-convenient, resealable opening are genius! Words of support during a time that is not so easy to deal with for many women, can be found on the outside.

I was thinking to myself, “You may be feeling like crap but, you will get through it girl! Yes!!

Product performance

I’m all about that plant based everything life, especially feminine care products for many reasons.  It is healthier for you and the effects on your body are undeniable. The ingredients found in mainstream feminine care products have been linked to bacterial vaginosis, hormonal imbalance, and fertility issues, and I don’t need those types of problems (neither do you). Also, as someone who has been diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) I know I have to be extra wary of everything I put on or in my body.

However, I have not been satisfied with natural feminine care brands I’ve used in the past. Not even a little bit. The leaking (not cute!), shifting, and the icky, wet feeling all day were enough to make me take my chances and go back to regular pads.

The Honey Pot really convinced me that non-toxic products can perform just as well (or better)!  They stay in place, the absorbency was just right, the size of the pad was perfect, and the herbal infusion gave my girly parts a very spa-like feeling.

Yes, each pad has mint, lavender, and aloe infused into it and I was totally here for it!  Honestly, on the first day the cooling sensation was pretty strong — like Vapor Vicks rub strong.  After that, I was used to it and almost welcomed the extra pampered vibe I was getting.

Thank you Honey Pot co. for winning me over! I have not tried the feminine wash or wipes but, I will be in the near future.

Here’s a video by the founder of the Honey Pot, Beatrica Espada on why she created this much-needed product line.

Have you made the switch to non-toxic feminine products?  What has been your experience?

Natural Laundry Detergent

• By

Hey loves! I know it’s been a minute or two since I have posted. Mommy life, work life, and wife life were taking up every second of my 24 hours, and to be honest I was having a difficult time finding the energy to log on and post. At the end of the day, even my fingers were exhausted but, here I am!

Today I’m sharing my top 3 picks for natural laundry detergent. I can clearly remember people looking at me crazy when I talked about choosing not to use Dreft baby detergent when Benjamin was born but, for me it was important to be careful about what I put on his skin. If I watch what I put on my skin then, why wouldn’t I do the same for him?

The Danger in Most Laundry Detergent Ingredients

Some of the chemicals and fragrances found in most detergents are just not worth the intoxicating laundry scent we’re used to (I used to LOVE the Tide fresh scent!).  They have been known to cause skin and eye irritation, and some are even possible carcinogens (cancer-causing).  When I was pregnant and found this out, I knew had to switch.

My top 4 picks

From my research and looking at reviews, the following four natural detergents are on my list. I have not used all of these as yet but, they are on my list until I find one I want to settle on.  Currently, I use Tide Free and Clear but I’m looking for something truly natural. All of the following contain essential oils, no toxic chemicals, plant-based ingredients, and are safe to use in front and top loading HE machines.

  1. Tandi’s Naturals laundry soap
  2. EcoMe Laundry detergent
  3. GreenShield laundry detergent
  4. Pure laundry detergent

Which laundry detergent do you currently use?

My Holy Grail of Natural Summer Skin Care

• By

Hey loves!

I hope you have been enjoying your summer so far.  In my mind, I seriously thought I would be sitting beachside in Florida by now but, things don’t always go as planned. I have been secretly really down about it but, I’m hoping hubby, Benjamin, and I can book a flight down there (or anywhere for that matter) sometime soon to see my side of the family.

I work in Education so I have been off work for a few weeks now, giving me time to love on my baby and work on a few life goals.  He’s walking and turning into a real, sociable little person.  It’s been amazing to watch! My prayer these days is to make this my life every day while still having a lucrative income (and I’m crazy enough to believe that it will happen).

The name of the game this summer is: New Experiences.  I have made it my mission to push fear aside and do new things in my life.  This includes taking Benjamin to different places around the city, getting him a passport, and giving him the opportunity to experience new things.  He’s only a year old so, almost everything is still new to him right now.  Something simple like going to a new park, a new restaurant or our local children’s museum is on my list of summer to-do’s.

With all of this running around in this Georgia summer heat, I have been even more vigilant about my skincare.  Forty is a few short years away and I’m trying to protect my skin from any premature aging as much as possible. Coming up a skincare regimen has always been a daunting task for me.  Keeping my naturally oily skin healthy without looking like an oil slick has been difficult over the years.  On top of that, this natural health journey will not allow me to put just anything on my skin.

Most skincare products on the market contain ingredients that can do more harm than good.  Skin allergies and hormone disruption are the most common negative side effects.

After searching high and low, I have come across some great products that are natural and give me that infamous summer glow I’ve been looking for.

My newly found treasures come from the MadHippie and Suntegrity skin care lines.

  1. The Mad Hippie Vitamin C serum is my must-have product every single day. Within a few days of using it, my skin felt like silk!  Full of antioxidants, along with vitamin C, this serum helps with discoloration, the appearance of wrinkles, and as a natural exfoliant thanks to the grapefruit extract. The Vitamin A serum is next up on my list of products to try.
  2. Suntegrity sunscreen is a product that’s been on my radar for about a few years now, and I can’t believe I just started using it a few, short months ago.  Sun protection is something that I have not always taken seriously because I have brown skin (biggest myth ever) and every sunscreen I tried was greasy and left a not so cute, white film on my skin. Not to mention finding one that was free of toxic ingredients such as oxybenzoneavobenzone, octisalateoctocrylenehomosalate, and octinoxate, seemed impossible. Until I found Suntegrity! No greasy feel, natural ingredients, and broad-spectrum protection all-in-one.

What is your skin care regimen? Which natural products do you swear by?

Choosing an Organic Baby Formula

• By

Along with all of the unbelievably joyful moments that being a new parent brings, also comes the worrisome, guilt-filled ones.  As someone who knows firsthand the benefits that eating the right foods can bring, I get consumed with what I am feeding Benjamin. With all that’s out here, I know I should be but it can be seriously overwhelming.

A recent dilemma I had was choosing a baby formula. It really should not bring this much anxiety to pick one, should it?

I have been giving Benjamin formula since birth, at the suggestion of the nurses at the hospital, and also breastfeeding.  He had digestive issues along with some constipation that was painful to even watch. We tried lots of different ones and finally settled on a Soy formula by Gerber Good Start.  After a few months though, I did not feel comfortable keeping him on the soy.

Then the hunt for a regular formula began.

Although very exhausting, breastfeeding was going pretty well so, I began to pump more hoping that I could have enough milk for him during the day while I’m at work.  Between working, nursing, and pumping I was getting really burned out, and I just wasn’t making enough milk.

I did some online research and reached out to family and friends who worked in the pediatric nursing field for some help.  Can I say I’m really surprised that there are no formulas without soy or dairy– ZERO. ZILCH. NADA.

Based on conversations I had with others and everything I read, I decided to go with Plum Organics and Earth’s Best Organic formulas.  They were both listed in the top three formulas online and recommended by almost everyone I spoke with.  What stood out to me was:

  • no corn syrup solids added
  • non-GMO ingredients
  • no added sweetners
  • organic lactose

I used Plum Organics organic formula for the past few weeks and I have no complaints! Benjamin drank it without frowning or spitting up (an issue he had when on soy sometimes).  The price point though ($42 for 32 oz), was hitting our pockets pretty hard especially since we were buying it every week.  I can definitely vouch for the great reviews though.

This week, I picked up Earth’s Best Organic instead.  It’s a little less expensive (about $41 for 35 oz) and has the same ingredients. We’re just a few days in but so far, so good.

I never expected this to give me so much angst but, I’m glad there are great options out there for moms like me who are very particular about what their babies put in their bodies.

I also make all of Benjamin’s pureed foods at home but, I have supplemented a few times with the Plum Organics  and Earth’s Best baby foods.  They are the only two brands of baby foods I trust to give my baby outside of what I make at home.

Which brands of organic baby formula and foods are your favorites?
